We need a new thread for this ? As I can't believe this can work ? A glider works with thermals, but how can that happen upto 90k feet ?
PS looking at the image of the craft it must be from Scaled Composits ?

More information, we will have to see if it has its test flight later today ?

Do we think it secretly has warp drive ? And Scotty is on board looking after the crystals

This thread might be devoid of my replies, but just to let you know, I'm following the latest developments of this project with great interest. I'm fascinated by how this engineless heavier-than-air thing is aiming to beat other jet aircraft to 90,000 feet - add to that, the aircraft would be doing 400mph at that altitude! And just think about the fuel burn difference between this and the SR71...

Surely it must have to go faster than 400 mph at 90k ft to get any lift at all, unless it can't fly at that height and can only zoom up to 90k ft and then descend ?
The fuel saving over the SR71 would be enormous thought. Back in the day sitting at RAF Mildenhall, hoping for a sighting of an SR71 you looked out for a KC135Q takeoff, then another KC135Q takeoff 60 mins later, then the doors to the SR71 shed would open and the Blackbird would go 20 mins later, if you were lucky and it was not just the tankers training ! An hour later another KC135Q would go up as well. Good old days !

It is a peculiar thing - but the increase in the knowledge of mankind is astonishing - this is the way to move the barriers. It is similar to the things like we were told in the 80s that the size of a transistors in the ICs is not going to be smaller that 1 um - that is is the size of the molecules of the photoresist and nothing can be done about it and we have now what ? 0,012 um and no physical barrier in sight. Similar in the 70s we were told in the university that two telephone wires can not simply carry more than 3 kbits - that it is the physics and nothing more can be expected. What goes now through two phone wires ? 75 mbits or more and no one is speaking of physical barriers. And we could continue. I hope this is similar.

Perlan II has moved to a new home for more flight testing.
