I think the A319neo was not stillborn. I did not expect high numbers, but ACJ, military, governmental, hot and high and a few like this, adding some to a A320 family fleet to keep maintenance and pilot pool simple, could add up to one or two hundred frames.

The reason I find the Spirit Airlines order interesting is that the A319neo seems to be ordered for 'regular' routes, not for a market niche. Of course, as you point out, Spirit's focus is commonality with other family members.

EASA has already certificated the smallest member of the A320neo-family with CFM International Leap-1A engines, approving this version in late 2018...Deliveries to airlines will begin in 2020, Airbus says. The manufacturer holds firm orders for 36 A319neos.

With the observation of an A319neo in China Southern's colours, I assume this is among those 11 unidentified orders?
