Sorry but I don't agree, I feel anybody on this forum could have written that piece, minus an obvious factual error or two, back in August. I agree what might have changed is that the contractual dispute with Airbus may be coming to a conclusion, although the link between resolving the Skymark issues and ANA's fleet strategy announcement later this month is speculative.
Cheers

I really couldn't believe it. Even now, as long as it's not officially announced, I have some doubts lingering in my mind.
Even by Japanese standards, ANA is really conservative, and they always stood by Boeing for the long-haul fleet. This sudden break in policy just seems so unlikely...
Then again, this order for three pieces is not really what you would call a commitment, is it? Now I think they just swallow that pill of buying as few as necessary for Airbus to let them take over Skymark - even though they have no use at all for the birds - so they can return to the comfortable duopoly on the domestic market. After all that is worth a lot more to ANA than the few hundred millions they probably pay to Airbus for the A380s.
A scenario I'm now a bit afraid of is that ANA buys the birds and immediately parks them somewhere in the desert, half-heartedly looking for a lessor (which of course they won't find - ask Amedeo...), and slowly forget about them.

A financially conservative company will not buy expensive assets and then park them. There is no reason they cannot use them profitably as people movers on leisure destinations, as outlined in the press. On such markets, frequency is known to matter little, while size provides a cost advantage over the competition.
All the details will be available on January 29th, though more details may be leaked out earlier.

Well, when respected financial news organisations cite insider sources, I tend to believe them, and when ANA writes "the story is not based on our official announcement", it sounds more as a confirmation than a denial to my ears. Let's resume the discussion on January 29th.
