I'm pretty sure you can "rent" a Beluga for your Transportation needs. I wonder if Airbus is going to pursue this more aggressively for additional revenue when the BelugaXL's are in service. Can't rule this out as a possibility (out of all the possible options) 😅

I assume they stopped doing it because they did not have extra capacity left when their own usage went up.

So who could make use of them out of Airbus? Satellite operators that want to build and test the assembled unit back at home and then deliver it to some launch site? Maybe helicopters that wouldn't need to be disassembled for transport? I can't think of much that some Antonov could not digest.

It's about potentially making themselves available for such possibility. Could be any transport load really. Could be Apples and Bananas. It's just an idea, who knows what Airbus decides to do with them. Personally, I just think Airbus should keep them and make the most out of what they can do with it. But I don't want to get too off-topic with this odd speculation. The Beluga XL is up in the air again today www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/f-wbxl

To me selling the old Belugas doesn't make any sense. Dark speculation: Maybe this was just intended as a little diversion from the sad A380 fate?

Could it be that they already found a buyer, announcing the forthcoming sale but not revealing who will take it/them?..

This article is in German but they ask Airbus what their plans are with the older Belugas and they still have no idea. They basically offer possibilities like we have discussed already above, either sell them, or keep them and offer special cargo flights to whoever requests them. It also mentions that they expect the first BelugaXL to go into service later this year, 2 more in 2020 and then one each year until 2023. Only until they have 3 BelugaXL's in service will the start fading out the older Beluga's. www.aero.de/news-31075/Airbus-fuer-Gespraeche-ueber-Beluga-XL-offen.html

Actually, one Beluga received an all-white paint scheme to be made available for non-Airbus duty (the aircraft once transported a famous painting, 'La Liberté guidant le peuple' by Eugène Delacroix). Later, Airbus put an end to these paid missions, and the aircraft received the same livery as other Belugas.

What was the Beluga number? And about which years?
