Unfortunately they seem to loose containers from time to time.
I once knew a sailboat owner who intended to sail around the world with only his boat and everything he owned on board. In the bay of biscay at night his ship got badly hit by some floating container. These are very hard to see as they are partly or entirely submerged.
His boat got damaged and sunk within seconds. He could only grab his "go bag" and abandoned his sinking ship. He was lucky to be picked up by some huge car ferry and lived to tell the story. Everything else - lost.

I met that gentleman personally. It was heartbreaking. He had -after some quite dramatic life including fleeing from east germany- his last remaining family pictures and stuff on board that were all lost. He is some IT specialist and very smart and did recover financially. He told me the biggest shock was that the ship would sink immediately with no delay. He could only grab what was in arm's reach and jump overboard into his life raft.
He told me floating containers are the biggest fear of yacht owners. There are plenty and you cannot see them.

So the phrase 'Fell off the back of a lorry' may need to be updated!
