After the age of Concorde will it be a dream, a wish or will it be true to create a new supersonic aircraft for civil transportation. First flight is planned for late 2017, I can't believe that. boomsupersonic.com/

I thought they were only thinking about flying a 3rd sized version ? Scaled Composites are good at turning out prototypes very quickly ! Lots of military aircraft engines available for a single engined prototype !

First flight end 2017 is targeted for the smaller twin seater only. Might be possible if they have the funding ready. Who knows what drone and black program stuff they can recycle for this project?

Speed of sound at usual flight levels above 10km is less than 1100km/h. You can filter in FR24 for speed. There are hundreds of flights with „super sonic“ ground speed;-)

You correctly wrote 'ground speed', but what matters is air speed.

I just wonder, why the speed of sound for ground is used and not the one of high altitude, referring to "super sonic" ground speed of an aircraft. But reading my last sentence I guess it makes (non)sense Of course I know that ground speed is the sum of airspeed and headwind and that for aerodynamics and engine trust only airspeed matters.

Of course I know that ground speed is the sum of airspeed and headwind and that for aerodynamics and engine trust only airspeed matters. The wind is not the only difference. For instance, an aircraft falling vertically has a lot of air speed and no ground speed at all ...
