Unsurprisingly, a new management team takes a look at the company investment plans.
The change of focus in favour of smaller planes might be driven by less favorable demand projections, and the recent purchase of some 77W. United however may also be interested in the A359 LR ...
One true surprise is that they mention the A330 (-neo). Would they take it for transatlantic flights, as DL did ?
I am sure Airbus would not accept a one-for-one order change ...

Flightglobal writes "[CFO Andrew Levy's] comments did little to quell questions about the future of United’s order for 35 Airbus A350-1000s". Actually, UA said nothing specific about its A35K order, so that we don't know what the fleet review is focusing on. It's UA pilots or pilot unions who are fighting A350 introduction, and pushing for more 77Ws (or 778/9), probably because they don't want to have to 'migrate' to the Airbus environment. They even use a strange pretext that the A35K crew rest would be inadequate ... They also root for CSeries because they wish UA to add a main line 100-seater rather than regional aircraft. Whether UA management has second thoughts about A35Ks or A359s, we don't know.

I don't think so, for many reasons. UA managers said nothing of that kind. There is an ongoing fleet review and the management pointed out that UA still has to make a difficult decision about a 767 replacement. No specific type was mentioned as a possible replacement. You claim that UA would not take its A35K, and would instead replace its 767s with A338/9. These are two different assertions, which need to be discussed separately. - The A330neo as a possible 767 replacement. The closest aircraft in size are the 788 and the A338, but neither of them is very attractive. The 739 or A339 are much larger and would be oversize on many UA routes. While the A330 would be an additional type in their fleet, the 787 family (whether -8 or -9) is already part of UA's fleet and should have an advantage. UA however may go for a mix of widebodies and modern long-range narrowbodies. We don't know UA's intentions where narrowbodies are concerned. Some speculate on an A321 order, but I believe that Boeing's recently disclosed MAX 10 is tailored to UA's needs, and might replace or supplement the MAX 9 UA has on order. The upshot is that the A338/9 are far from an obvious choice to replace the 767. - The cancellation of the A35K order May I remind you that the present UA management found an order for 25 A359 when they took the helm, and changed it for 35 A35K. The only reason for speculation about a cancellation are the following. - The old A.net belief that the UA management favours Boeing over Airbus. a strange view of business, to say the least ! - The recent orders for fourteen 77W by UA. This move however can be viewed as an opportunistic decision based on firesale prices, not as a change of plan. I don't believe for a minute that UA would cancel a very efficient plane that they have on order, for an aircraft of a previous generation. For long range, price cannot offset a large difference in cost of operation. - The fact that UA pilots don't want to be forced to migrate to the Airbus environment and have been generating rumours of more 77W orders from UA instead of introducing A350s. Forget pilot rumours ! I can see changes to the A350 order (partly converted back to A359, etc) but not a cancellation.

I think I have got the answer for UA on replacing their old B767s, Boeing still builds B767s, so just order some new ones, they will be lighter and benefit from the latest aero tweeks paid for by the USAF
