Although Scott @ leeham believes it is possible for UA to cancel 350 I didn't see any comment on the Leeham blog on the purported -XLR order by UA . So, I have no idea of Leeham's views on the allegation that the deal might be done to offset an A350 cancellation. There have been such rumours in the past, but I doubt Airbus would agree.

United defers A350 deliveries to 2027 04 December, 2019 SOURCE: Cirium Dashboard BY: Firdaus Hashim Singapore www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/united-defers-a350-deliveries-to-2027-462669/United Airlines is deferring its order for 45 Airbus A350-900s to 2027. The move would "better align" with its operational needs, says the Star Alliance carrier, alongside a separate order for 50 A321XLRs.
Excellent news surely in picking up another big A350 customer who was faced with too long delays in its introduction had they wished to pursue?

Well they have 74x 772 - some very old - up to 25 Years - most around 20. Obviously those need to be replaced not far away, how ever the 787 - all versions are coming in. The A359 would be perfect replacement for the B772s but this is United ..... they do love Boeing what ever Boeing does.....

If we will ever see the A350 in United colours ? The fun with the decision to further delay A350 deliveries is that it will re-kindle forum speculation on the very question you asked ... I'm quite sure UA will eventually take the A350. The fact that UA ordered the -XLR without an A350 cancellation is more evidence to me, but I'm quite sure others are claiming the A350 order is dead ...

I duplicate my latest post in the 'A321XLR' thread, as it actually belongs here.
The fun with the decision to further delay A350 deliveries is that it will re-kindle forum speculation on the very question [bmw 801] asked : '[Shall] we ever see the A350 in United colours ?'

I could imagine a situation, where UA decides to take 787-9 and 787-10 instead. But as long as there are firm orders for 45 A350-900, one should assume that UA will take them one day. The A321XLR sells like hot cakes, it is not necessary for Airbus to offer special deals like converting from A350. If UA would look to the A330neo, we would talk about a completely different situation.
