The fun with the decision to further delay A350 deliveries is that it will re-kindle forum speculation on the very question you asked ... I'm quite sure UA will eventually take the A350. The fact that UA ordered the -XLR without an A350 cancellation is more evidence to me, but I'm quite sure others are claiming the A350 order is dead ... I could imagine a situation, where UA decides to take 787-9 and 787-10 instead. But as long as there are firm orders for 45 A350-900, one should assume that UA will take them one day. The A321XLR sells like hot cakes, it is not necessary for Airbus to offer special deals like converting from A350. If UA would look to the A330neo, we would talk about a completely different situation. For one thing, we know that Airbus is working to get a new engine programme on the A350 sometime around the latter part of the next decade. To start receiving the first deliveries of a batch of 45 aircraft that late from 2027 onwards when the A350neo is around the corner doesn't sound like a good idea in my books. I feel that by pushing it out, they've postponed the decision on what to do with the order. It looks less likely that they will take deliveries but maybe they are aware of it and will convert it to A350neo orders when it gets launched. And sticking to the A350neo will help them down the road when they eventually need to replace the 77Ws.

I duplicate my latest post in the 'A321XLR' thread, as it actually belongs here. The fun with the decision to further delay A350 deliveries is that it will re-kindle forum speculation on the very question [bmw 801] asked : '[Shall] we ever see the A350 in United colours ?' I'm quite sure UA will eventually take the A350. The fact that UA ordered the -XLR without an A350 cancellation is more evidence to me, but I'm quite sure others are claiming the A350 order is dead ... DL canceled 787 without any new order So far the only thing that kept me believing UA will take the plane is they don't have sufficient 787 on order. However, this may change ....

UA would not have needed to increase the order with every change. As long as an Airline has a firm order without a declaration they need to change it, I assume they will stick by the order. USA airlines look very serious at CAPEX, so I believe, that ordering the 50 A321XLR did eat up the planed investment frame for the years until 2027.

United has 45 A350 on order (although keep pushing back) and 46 options on B787-8/9/10.
It makes more sense for United to keep buying more B787, and convert A350 order to A321.

Don't see United operating Airbus widebody at least in the short to medium term. 787-10IGW to replace TPAC PW 777-200ER fleet and more 787-9s for both 767-300ER and lower volume 777-200ER routes. Don't really see UA ordering more 787-8s either. And A350 deposits for about ~120 A321neo/LR/XLRs. (I think UA can still absorb that even though they still have ~350 MAXes on order)
