Is Airbus even going to built it with just six on order? I'd imagine that the A330-800 will form the basis for an upgraded A330F or MRTT.

We had the same discussion just a few days ago ! Nothing new, HA applies some pressure on Airbus by inviting Boeing to the party.
As regards the A338, we know that the parts have been built and ferried to TLS. We got an updated timeline yesterday with A339 first flight. So, we know for certain that this sub-type is being built, let's not start the same discussion all over again.

We know AB are building 1 A330-800 for the test program, but with only 6 x -800 on order, all from Hawaiian it is a concern !
