They will need the VLA again at one point of time. As you said airboche "Maybe the A380 came to early and was lost in between generations but on the medium run I see quads (or possibly three engined) high capacity airliners returning", there is a possibility that AIRBUS will restart the A380 program. The demand for the aircraft might potentially grow again, as passengers volume will outstrip airport capacity. I highly doubt that AIRBUS will make a 800 seater A350 or BOEING make a 800 seater B777X. If AIRBUS to restart A380 production they should build the A380-900.

A380 restart? I don't see this happening. The suppliers end their production, final assembly gets converted, staff reassigned and it would be an entirely new program in any way. All that to deliver yesterday's big airplane? They would build a new one for sure if there is a market.

Shouldn't it be cheaper to upgrade an existing model than build an entirely new one?

Not after any longer interruption.

I do not believe that A380 will come back in the way it is - it is pretty similar to the B767 - it is simply outdated - the technology progressed, the structure is too heavy and too complicated. The economy does not work. For the airlines it cost almost the same to send one A380 or two A339 etc... - so sending two A339 etc... delivers better service to the customer, more flexibility..... Also do not forget the wake behind the A380 - you need almost twice as long delay provided next plane is not A380, so it does not help much with the congestion (if you do not have many A380 going from the same place). Also the smaller planes allow service to other cities - not only megahubs - than you do not have the congestion, also the people are happier to not have to change planes in those..... If the cost to send A380 and A350 would be similar than of course...., but it is not. We do know that per seat it is pretty comparable ! So I do not believe we will see those coming back anytime soon. Also I do not predict very bright future fot the B779 - since it seems to be too heavy and too big for the changing word. But as always: "we will see"

US trade representatives thinks that a380 production maybe restarted More evidence that reality hardly matters in the legal world ...

I wonder if this is related to the end of A380 wing production or not ?

Might very well be. BTW Where is that single prebuilt A380-freighter wing set?
