It is so unexpected ... I am afraid it might be a PR blunder from somebody using outdated information ...
I want to believe in it, though ... Could VS be one of Doric's lessees ? The dates would match.

I don't know who Linenberg is but I think he talks b*llshit. Also look at the link provided where you can clearly see "Virgin America" written in stead of "Virgin Atlantic".
In my opinion: a load of crap !!

The thing I can't get is WHY did VS rushed to order their A380... where I work If I had purchased something that was not of reasonably immediate usage among the 'supply chain' I'd have been already fired. Of course, it's a delicate matter, I feel sorry for them but hey, If you were not so (economically) sure about your long term investment (this six superjumbos) keep quiet, look at the market, and take your decision... I love Virgin brand, but as a fan I'm really disappointed with these deferrings. That said, today in Italy is bank holiday, I'm going back to bed. Cheers! AOIspotter

AOIspotter A big part of Virgin's problems has been its shareholding airline partners. When Singapore had a 49% stake in Virgin they put pressure on Virgin to defer deliveries partly because of the program delays and also Singapore wanting Virgin's original delivery slots(Working from memory on that point so not sure). Delta, who currently own 49%, like other US carriers aren't keen at all on super jumbos so things look a bit bleak for Virgin buying any. The frustrating point is that the 380 would be perfect for Virgin on its high volume holiday routes to Florida from London and Manchester. It is also a relatively small International carrier which doesn't help when wanting to purchase such an expensive bit of kit. I do so hope Virgin gets it act together but it has struggled quite a bit in recent years and needs to urgently replace its uneconomical A340's.

I think reiterating that Virgin is "sitting on the fence" is rather good news - it means that no decision has been made, a purchase still being on the table, while many believe the order is bound to be cancelled.
I also noticed that Branson calls the company's A380 rights "options" when they are listed by Airbus as "firm orders". This reminds me or Airbus once saying that Virgin had "cancellation rights". All this probably means the same with different words : Virgin is free to purchase or not, probably without any financial penalty in the latter case.

The thing I can't get is WHY did VS rushed to order their A380... It was a totally different economic climate when they ordered in 2000.
