In the end of the article they also agree that the new 777 will cannibalize sales of the 747.

From the video that is the source of the news story, they also talk about how in 2013, Boeing has received commitments for "11 more Intercontinentals, including one airline that's never bought the 747 before." The known ones for this year (I believe) are the 5 for KE and the 2 for CA. Thoughts on the 4 unknown ones? Also, LH is apparently happy with their 747-8i fleet, to the point that they have recently created a customer testimonial video for Boeing. This seems to be a positive sign that they will take all 19 they currently have on order, especially in light of their recent cancellation of 3 A380s. Going forward, perhaps they will eventually take some more as their fleet plans continue to adjust and as they get more data from the new block of 8i's.

How about "Silk Way Airlines" as freighter or "Arik Air" for passengers ... but this order was in 2011 ... As far as I read recently when LH was dropping the A380 orders they also dropped 20 options for further 747-8 ...

2 of the 4 MoUs for The Silk Way order have already been firmed earlier this year. The Arik Air order was firmed in June of 2011, so these new commitments have to be something else.
LH did recently trim 3 of their A380 orders, but nothing was said about their existing 8i orders, nor any of their purchase rights. I think that testimonial video is probably a positive in that respect.

Speaking of MoUs, there is a new article up on ATW that is behind the paywall, but the first paragraph that is displayed contains this nugget:
"Transaero Airlines, Russia’s second largest airline, expects its fast pace of growth to continue over the next several years as it anticipates delivery of both its first Airbus A380 and first Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental in 2015."
As far as I know, the Transearo order is still an MoU, does anyone have any additional information? Or is this perhaps just a positive sign that they will indeed be firmed?
Maybe the body of the article contains more information, does anyone have a subscription and is willing to post a summary or any other interesting bits of information?

This Aviation Week story makes it seem as it is completely firm from Transaero's point of view. It also talks a bit about how they will look to use their 748s on routes where they see some business/premium traffic along with their usual tourists, as opposed to their A380s which will be on the tourist heavy routes. Additionally, they mention that after these first units are in their fleet and have been evaluated, they will likely make a decision on further replacement and expansion of their fleet.

It appears that perhaps the Boeing O+D listing is simply waiting on a formal announcement? I don't think so. In such a case, Boeing would immediately book an order from "an undisclosed customer", and we would be playing a different guessgame. I suppose that the airline's communication is ahead of the legal/financial (down payment) situation ...
