Times are a changing... But can BA work with only a dozen 380s? I would think that thats not enough for them. Times certainly are changing, the era of the 747 is coming to a close and it's a sad sight to see it disappear. Since the beginning of the year, I've seen 2 carriers swap their 747s here in Sydney with MH changing to the A330 and BA changing to the 77W. Now there are only 4 carriers who operate pax 747s to Sydney, QF which is gradually retiring the 744 fleet, UA, TG and FJ (Air Pacific) who will soon swap it with their new A332s. Fortunately, the freighter models will continue to grace the skies for years to come. As to your question, can BA work with only a dozen A380s, yes they probably can especially as they are still taking delivery of 77Ws and are rumored to soon purchase the A350-1000 and eventually the 777-9X which will be able to fill in the majority of the missions that the 747 currently fulfills. However as Heathrow becomes even more slot restricted, BA will see a greater need for the A380. 12 aircraft is not a lot for an airline the size of BA considering the future size of other A380 fleets, such as SQ with 19 delivered and 5 on order and Lufthansa with 10 delivered and 9 on order. All three airlines currently have similar sized long haul fleets (in terms of aircraft number). BA will find that their fleet will be quickly used up. To have a daily Lax and Hkg service will take at least three aircraft. Lufthansa with 10 aircraft currently only flies to 6 destinations with the A380.

BA has 52 747's in their fleet with a seat count going from 290 to 340. The lower hand can be replaced by the 787-10X and the upper hand by the A350-1000. The A380 can serve the trunk routes.

BA appears to be right-sizing their fleet for their route network. Before the 77W, they just had the 747 for routes requiring a bigger aircraft than the 772, which is a big jump in capacity when you consider what the 744 was *supposed* to carry efficiently. So, IMO, any aircraft order that is bigger than a 772 sized aircraft is intended for the 747 replacement (unless they are also looking at expansions).

Still they are going to use them until 2021, another 7 - 8 years, they will be really uneconomical compared to other aircraft at that time. Nice planes but frankly good riddance; I have often done the ARN-BKK flight with Thai with the 747 and they are really noisy compared to 777 or any airbus, and the TV is in the aisle with no choice on what is shown and blocked by passengers standing around. I have newer flown the the 747-8 thou.

Out of 528 delivered 747-400 passenger model roughly how many are still flying? Most of them? Mostly older models that has been scrapped?

Please be aware that any young girl you may be travelling with to-day will show her age after a number of cycles and flight hours ... Please also remember that there is a lot of hidden beauty beyond IFE ...

[/quote] Well many old ladies look elegant and shapely on a distance but when you get inside her clothes you see the difference to a young girl! The beautiful lines looses the lure after 6 hours in the air or so!
