These 5 frames were probably intended as a replacement for SQ's first frames. For some reason, I don't think this top up order is meant to replace early frames. I believe the actual replacement orders will come post 2020 when Airbus refreshes the A380 with some sort of an upgrade. Maybe ... But why take delivery in 2017 if they needed the aircraft to upgauge ? Airbus must have pushed them hard to take delivery from 2015 (remember these vacant slots) ... On the other hand, 2017 is ten years after the first A380 deliveries, so it might be a strategy of replacement of early overweight frames. From another angle, I am not sure that SQ was aware of an upcoming A380 refreshment when they ordered these five frames ...

From Fabien's link :
"A Singapore Airlines spokeswoman said the flights would be downgauged to 777-300ERs as a result of operational requirements across the airline's network.
Singapore Airlines is deploying A380s into the Indian market for the first time from late May after that nation's aviation regulator rescinded a longstanding ban on the aircraft."
So, the Sydney Morning Herald believes that the rationale for SQ's move is to make one (two ?) A380 available to serve the Indian market. They are probably right.

Those first SQ A380s are on lease with Doric, with a lease period of 12 years. I doubt the airline can replace them after 10 years already, it would undermine Doric's business plan (the last two years of the lease period are the profits).

With A380s being able to fly to India now, can they use additional A380s. What about an extra order?
