When and what do you think Airbus will announce as its next development program ?
Boeing seems to have its hands full if the 777X and the 787-10 both go ahead. With good progress on the A359 and the wing bracket cracks on the 388, Airbus just might have the capacity to commit to something new before too long.
I doubt they have that much capacity in the next few years. First the A350 program must be finalized, including the -800 and -1000, which will go on untill 2017. And at the same time the A320NEO will take a lot of effort
But maybe in 2015-2016 we'll see a new announcement - which my guess will be the A380-900, with a post 2020 EIS
Very unlikely. If Airbus does have the money and engineering resources to do that, it would be better spent on developing a better derivative of the A350 to replace the A330.
A350 a double stretch A350-1100
Probably stretch too far. But I do wonder if such a plane can compete with the 777X in the way the 787-10 would compete with the A350-900. i.e. A lighter frame than its competing counterpart that can fulfill regional missions.
A388 new engine
Quite likely in my opinion. Airbus has to keep a good CASM advantage over the 777X to make it sell. A Trent XWB derivative would be ideal as it would complement the A350 very well. And if PW does go ahead with a GTF for the A350-800 and -900, they might as well make it available for the A380 as it would be in the same thrust class too.
A389 stretch with or without new engines
Also quite likely. It's another way Airbus could pull away from the 777X. But I think EIS should be around the time big A380 operators like Emirates would need to replace their earliest frames. As for the development costs, a big order from Emirates alone could cover it. Much of the wing work for the -900 is already built into the -800 frame.
