It shows that they work silently in the background on improvement of the current planes - as AB does perpetually all the time. You can not compare A330 MSN10 and MSN1700 - those are vastly different planes - the same A320 MSN10 and A320 MSN6500
It might be silent change just going on - or preparation for new plane to come in a couple of years.

So could this be a first step to a bigger sized wing for the A321neo making it possible to stretch it way beyound any possible MAX 10 then? This is a composite wing box. Introducing composites on the A320 family wings would be a major decision. I don't think it is time for a major new development, but it might happen some day ... The last paragraph backs that up. Quote - "The teams’ next objective is to prepare the single-piece composite centre wing box for industrialisation using a full-scale demonstrator, with the goal of readying it for use on next-generation aircraft."

Developing technologies is done independantly from aircraft development. You must have a 'bank' of available technologies to chose from when you start designing a new plane.

It's either for the A320-family or for the next one, which would make it even more interesting. Airbus seems to claim it's for a future family. However I'd say Airbus could "neoneo" the A320 another time with updated wings, different materials and such before the next big step must come. Depends on Boeing launching some 737 follow on family.

If this wing box both reduces production cost, compared to the current CFRP, and reduces weight, against an aluminium wingbox, I would see it as a possibility, that one day a A320, A330 or A350 will have this type of wing box. It would be a long wait for a completely new frame.

I'd call that one A320ultra (*trademark to me please$$$ ) We have seen Airbus having some "perfect" A350XWB ready for launch after they had claimed to just launch some A330 based minor update before. The same might happen with the A320. Whatever Boeing does they might have something new from scratch ready. It's so quiet, too quiet for my taste.
