How lucky of you to have tried the aircraft and thanks for the detailed descriptions of what the aircraft is like! However I think we've missed the biggest question, How were the carpets?

Earlier in the week I went to Melbourne for a few days flying on Jetstar's 787 on the way down (my first flight on a 787 ). I found the aircraft to be very quiet although my mother didn't like the high pitch sounds during takeoff and landing. The interior was pretty good and the seat width was better than I had feared with legroom being sufficient (unlike my Tigerair A320 on the way back). Anyway, below are a few photos from Sydney airport as well from my flight with more pics in the following link www.flickr.com/photos/82999179@N04/sets/72157656286419865 Thai 747-400 HS-TGA Syd Jul15 by JKKW, on Flickr LAN Chile 787-8 CC-BBC Syd Jul15 by JKKW, on Flickr A philidor special (another similar shot from a slightly different angle here) LAN Chile 787-8 CC-BBC Syd Jul15 by JKKW, on Flickr Qantas A330-200 VH-EBG Syd Jul15 by JKKW, on Flickr Jetstar 787-8 VH-VKD Syd Jul15 by JKKW, on Flickr Hey look, I have a 737 as a winglet Jetstar 787 Syd by JKKW, on Flickr Turning onto final into Melbourne Airport. Thank you for sharing the pictures! Beautiful! I found the aircraft to be very quiet although my mother didn't like the high pitch sounds during takeoff and landing. I have flown on 787s of three different airlines so far. On the first trip with ANA, I also found this high-pitched noise to be extremely irritating. The second one was with United, and I had the same problem again. Curiously, earlier this month I had the "pleasure" to fly with Air Canada's 787, in which I didn't notice the noise at all...

Perhaps this has something to do with where you are seated within the aircraft. My mother was seated a few rows in front of the third door (the one just behind the wing) and so she was right over the flaps whilst I was seated two rows behind the door and therefore further away from the wings and flaps.

Great shots all around Jkkw. Special mention to the "737" winglet pic and the philidor special . And what does it take for one to get lucky enough to snap pics of the cockpit?

Excellent pictures, many thanks Jkkw!! I am surprised in fact that you found the 787 silent (except takeoff and landing, it's been mentioned a few times before...), I don't remember if you would have tried the A380 that you could compare it with?..... I'm just also now realising, my sole flight aboard a B787(-8) was on the second B787 delivered (JA802A), could improvements have been made noisewise for later built frames?...... (the whole flight was SO noisy.........) P.S. also henge lucky you!!

And what does it take for one to get lucky enough to snap pics of the cockpit? Luck is certainly involved!! Sometimes I would ask the flight attendants whether it would be possible to visit the cockpit after we've arrived at the gate and at times that will work and they'll ask the pilots but at other times they say it's against company policy. Asking the pilots directly is generally more successful although it's much harder to actually ask them. Once on a QF 747 I asked to look at the upper deck before leaving the aircraft (most of the passengers had already left) and when a flight attendant who was on the upper deck asked if I had lost/misplaced something, I explained that I was an aviation enthusiast who was just having a look at the upper deck and she very kindly then asked the pilots whether it was possible for me to visit the cockpit. My experience on the 787 was somewhat similar, I waited for most (if not all) passenger to leave the aircraft and when I walked past the cockpit, the door was opened so I so stood outside to have a quick look. The pilots who were packing up and about to leave noticed me and we engaged in conversation and they invited me in to have a closer look. Over the past few years I've been fortunate enough to visit the cockpit of an A320, A330, A340, A380, 747 and now the 787 although after all these visits, I keep forgetting how small cockpits are (they always look bigger in the pictures)! I have flown on the A380 although my last flight was a few years ago so I can't exactly remember how quiet/soft it was. That's interesting and it wouldn't surprise me if you're right in saying the newer aircraft had better soundproofing. What might have helped the quietness of my flight was how light the aircraft was since it was a short flight (1.5 Hrs) and the aircraft only had around 160 passengers onboard.
