I don't actually think what EY is that great. I believe that airlines don't make their money with First class (or Residence), but with J or Y. I know a few people who've flown First, but none of them had actually paid for it, but used miles to upgrade. Is also shown by the fact that TAM will get rid of First on their B777, just after two years of updating it and fill the new place with J. And well I think QR's J product is much better. I personally really don't like the idea of having to sit in the opposite direction of flight. Also a reason why I don't like BA's J product. Don't know whether you actually would feel the difference as I have only flown once on J so far, but this are the impressions I got from seeing photos and animations.

I think a lot of the appeal is that it's essentially an apartment that you have for the x amount of hours your flight is. But I agree. If the cost of the ticket is about the same if not more than what we'd pay in a year's worth of rent, then it's really not worth it. I'd rather shell out that much money (If I even had that much disposable income to begin with.) on a ritzy hotel in some exotic location than have it for only a matter of hours where all I need is a window, a pillow, eye mask, a good playlist on my iTunes, and a few good books on my kindle (aka iPad mini).

Well Mr. Hogan (EY CEO) claims his airline is making money with F class.

According to James Hogan, this is an argument for EY to install F-class on some of their aircrafts "What we've seen is that most European carriers have retreated from first class, so this gives us more opportunity to sell where we are confident there is still a market for first class"Then it is always possible to either agree or disagree, but they seems to have their reasons. Also remember that things work a little different in those part of the world

I think this super first class might actually work commercially. Aside from the great PR value all the riches will strive to get those two seats. Etihad won't have to give them away for free, miles or discounts. And compared to long range flights in business jets it's actually cheap. For the first time in an airliner you have private jet style privacy.
Great way to go. (Out of my range) But it makes the rest of F class everywhere certainly look shabby. This will start a competition about new first class improvements. And it "wastes" space that only the A380 has to offer. A unique selling point for the big bus aside from 11-abreast.

And they won't, it isn't available as an upgrade nor can staff claim travel in the residence (including James Hogan) I think this super first class might actually work commercially. I agree, I had a look at the price of the residence and it's 5 time more expensive than a first class seat which is quite a mark up considering that in terms of real estate the residence only take up the space of what would otherwise be 1 first class apartment and 2 lavatories (of course the difference in price also reflects the difference in service and not just on board real estate). Sure it might not have some of the perks that flying in a private jet gives you (such as the flexibility) but as you said it is a 'cheaper' alternative. I personally really don't like the idea of having to sit in the opposite direction of flight. Also a reason why I don't like BA's J product. Yes, it must be weird to fly backwards but then again, you wouldn't feel it if you were in cruise and the only way you would know at that stage of flight is by looking out of the window. On a side note, the missing seat in the lower deck economy class section shows that like many other A380 operators, EY's aircraft will have their crew rest located below the main deck.

Surely, EY has definitely raised the bar (pun intended ). The 'residence' is a very clever use of space, given how it only takes up one regular F seat. The bathroom is something that would be there even without the residence and it would have been one too many in any case given the number of F passengers. The bedroom is just making use of residual space in the 'forehead' that cannot be used for regular seating. Not too keen on the artwork and colours though - QR's is better imo. I can see the 'residence' being used by Statesmen when they travel with their entourage, or top artists, actors, athletes etc. I don't think it is something targeted at business flyers or executives, although it is still a possibility. The QR A380 configuration looks relatively boring now. It still looks very good, functional, better than most other operators, but somehow EY has moved well ahead of the pack in terms of luxury. Even Emirates has something interesting on their A380s, like the showers and considering their upcoming 'bedroom' upgrade, AAB will definitely be kicking at himself now. By the way, what will the 'residence' fare code be? F+ ?

Suites are "R" (Rapide=Concorde) already aren't they? So it must be something else.
