According to John Ostrower in the Wall Street Journal, the incident was an uncontained engine failure. online.wsj.com/articles/new-bombardier-jet-suffers-major-engine-failure-1401475483"According to two people familiar with the incident, the failure inside the engine was 'uncontained' and debris spewed out of its casing." That makes the event a serious incident, and explains why BBD decided to put the flight test programme on hold.

"The engine failure damaged the engine nacelle and fuselage of the CSeries test aircraft FTV1, with no apparent damage to the wing nor any fuel leaks." "This incident is unrelated to a recent incident with another GTF engine on April 29th. In that incident, a different GTF engine experienced an anomaly and caught fire, which was extinguished quickly. That root cause turned out to be a minor anomaly that was identified and corrected, and that engine resumed flying the next day. There is no relationship between that incident and the FTV1 engine failure." "While it is too early to tell, we believe that Bombardier built in about six months of slack into their forecast of EIS in the second half of 2015" airinsight.com/2014/06/01/engine-failure-what-it-means-for-cseries-and-gtf/

www.reuters.com/article/2014/06/02/airlines-iata-bombardier-idUSL6N0OJ4DH20140602"Canada's Bombardier Inc has narrowed its investigation of an engine failure on its new CSeries airliner to a few possible causes and said the test plane could be back in the air quickly if the cause turns out to be what the company suspects." "A senior industry source said the problem may have been caused by an oil shortage or "oil starvation" inside the engine, but that could not be confirmed."

Well, that's good to hear...in a way. Pratt does insist that the gearbox is not a life limited part so I would hope that a lot of durability is built into it, and of course it's only been through a few hundred hours of testing on FTV1!

It could be that the main problem is not the cause of the engine event but the failure of containment.

As I suspected, it was a failure of the LPT. However, it is relieving to note that it wasn't anything to do with the gearbox. They mention that the specific engine was a problematic example and that BBD had considered sending it back to PW but elected to perform some maintenance. It went boom right after this.
