I don't know European Aviation well. From the link, they are a narrowbody operator. What may their plan be, for the purchase of 7 A346 and 3 A345 ? Are they an ACMI operator ? Or are they a charter operator ? Could it be a purely speculative purchase ?

Quite an upgrade to the fleet !!!!!! European Aviation is specialized in spare parts and maintenance. So these A340s are probably going to the axe.

Is this the same European Aviation that bought the old BA 747-200s (amongst others), or a different entity? Yes it is. They still use the same code E7/EAF. They operated 8 747-200's, as well as a few A300's and a bunch of 737's. I don't know if still owned by Paul Stoddart, the Australian millionaire/Formula One team owner.

Air Belgium adds first a340s: www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/64482-air-belgium-adds-first-a340s-outlines-charleroi-ops-plan"Air Belgium (ABB, Brussels Charleroi) has taken delivery of its first two aircraft as it prepares to complete its AOC certification drive later this month. A340-300s OO-ABA (msn 835) and OO-ABB (msn 844) are part of a quartet of former Finnair A340s that are expected to be in service by late June plying routes to seven destinations. The aircraft will seat a total of 303 passengers each. According to the Belga news agency, airline CEO Niky Terzakis said the start-up is looking to commence operations in late March with flights to Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok. The launch would coincide with that of Cathay Pacific (CX, Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok) which intends to start its own direct 4x weekly Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok-Brussels National service on March 25 using A350-900 equipment. Terzakis has since confirmed to ch-aviation that given the airfield's runway 07/25 is only 2,500 metres-long, Air Belgium's service will operate with bellyhold cargo payload restrictions albeit only on outbound sectors. "We will be operating temporarily at reduced lower deck cargo uplift Eastbound from Charleroi and essentially only on the longest route, Charleroi to Hong Kong," he said in an emailed response. "We will be starting the operation with aircraft configured in 257 seats and [once the restrictions are eased] we will introduce the new configuration of 303 seats. We do not expect any passenger uplift limitations. The prospect of an en-route fuel stop is [also] out of the question. Needless to say that Westbound, we shall have no limitation on pax nor cargo." The limitations will be progressively lifted once outstanding environmental and infrastructural issues are resolved including the addition of a 700-metre extension to runway 07/25. "The runway extension shall be completed by end of 2020 if no major delay [is] encountered. This involves not just the runway, but also additional taxiways, etc. I am confident about the Walloon Region's ability to complete this development in time. I’ve seen them doing much more challenging [tasks] when developing Liège Airport," he added. Although no additional services beyond Hong Kong have yet been revealed, Terzakis told a press conference earlier this month that Air Belgium has not excluded the North and South American markets."
