A situation point of TAP & HiFly A340s ;
TAP
CS-TOA (Msn 041), A340-312, still active, phase out planned for November, 2019 CS-TOB (Msn 044), A340-312, still active, phase out planned for December, 2019 CS-TOC (Msn 079), A340-312, still active, phase out planned for December, 2019 CS-TOD (Msn 091), A340-312, still active, phase out planned for December, 2019
Possibly the last of the -312 variant still flying, these veretarns are used not only in african routes, as mentioned above, but also on the Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro and Recife routes, and surrprisingly, since the start of the current summer schedule, in some ocasions even on short haul routes from Lisbon to points in Europe. One such example was CS-TOD flying LIS-LHR-LIs yesterday, on rotation TP 1356/TP 1357. The initial idea was to keep these old but reliable guys as back up planes in case the A339s had somme 'hick-ups', but the new machines have been working as swiss watches up untill now-
HFY/HFY Malta
The popular portuguese lessor uses its machines Worldwide
CS-TQY (Msn 190) A340-313X, active CS-TQZ (Msn 202) A340-313X, active CS-TFX (Msn 912) A340-542X, stored , and a rare machine (only 5 of the -542 variant were built, I believe) 9H-JAI (Msn 236) A340-313X, stored (previousely leased to Estelar) 9H-FOX (Msn 185) A340-313X, active 9H-SUN (Msn 367) A340-313X, active 9H-SOL (Msn 483) A340-313X, active 9H-TQM (Msn 483) A340-313X, active

The TAP A340 rotation(s) to LHR on Monday could have been to provide extra capacity at the end of the 4 day UK Easter Bank Holiday Weekend ? I think I saw a couple of TAP A340 flights to LHR late last week as well, Thur / Fri ?

I think I saw a couple of TAP A340 flights to LHR late last week as well, Thur / Fri ? According with my records, here are some flights operated by the old reliable 340's in Europe in recent times ; Date A/C Rotation March 15 CS-TOC TP 1272/TP 1275 (LIS-VIE-LIS) April 13 CS-TOA TP 434/TP 433 (LIS-ORY-LIS) April 14 CS-TOB TP 1368/TP 1361 (LIS-LHR-LIS) April 16 CS-TOD TP 1356/TP 1357 (LIS-LHR-LIS) April 22 CS-TOC TP 434/TP 433 (LIS-ORY-LIS) April 22 CS-TOD TP 1356/TP 1357 (LIS-LHR-LIS) April 24 CS-TOA TP 442/TP 441 (LIS-ORY-LIS) Generically speaking, TAP has been using Widebody planes on european rotations quite frequently lately (on a daily basis, today is a good example, with 5 assigned rotations), most notably due to a big groth in traffic. As for the 340s, prior to the summer schedule, there was a period of some inactivity (due to the good performance of the A339s), wich raised some questions concerning any anticipation of phase out dates (for the record, CS-TOB was on the ground for some 10 days), but with all this activity, that now seems to be unlikely right now, even with more A330Neos arriving soon (there are 5 with engines at TLS on several test phases). When the last one leaves the fleet everyone will be missing them. With a distinct personality - lomg take offs, very smooth landings -, t they're really 'show stoppers' at any airport. One of them deserves a nice place on a museum (I would love to have a big farm to keep CS-TOA, lol).
