I have read many excellent posts on this subject. Of course, a plane must be economical, but I think we have not yet noticed a very important aspect: the image of the Airline! A commercial for example by EK, TG or LH, shows not a B777 or an A330, but only the A380. I believe Emirates uses very intensively this image. To me this is very clever and of course a investment in the future. I agree ! EK has consistently built an international brand, using the A380 as its flag carrier. Other airlines should take that page from their book ! US airlines in particular pay little attention to their image - or lack thereof - in international markets, and have lost many opportunities.

Dear philidor, that is exactly what I mean. Everyone is worried about the success of Emirates. I think that some airline managers are slowly nervous when they see that EK is on a completely different way. The future will show which was the right way! I'm really very curious.

I disagree, I dont think the A380 is what made EK what they are today. Emirates is uniquely positioned in many ways. You pay very little income tax, if any, in Dubai, which allows EK to pay comparatively competitive wages in key positions. They operate from a single airport, unlike most other major carriers, specifically US carriers. DXB has no night departure restrictions, also unlike most major airports. And last but not least, Dubai is uniquely positioned at the crossroads of many major routes, which makes Dubai a perfect hub airport.
I love the A380 as much as the next guy, but it's not a do-it-all saviour of the day. For the wrong airline, the A380 may be what sinks the ship.

Taliesin is right, there is more than one reason to EK's rise, but they did develop a powerful brand image, based on the A380, and this is one of the reasons of their success (among others).
