A bit of a surprise to see the A35K being the one in the running to compete with the 778 for the RFP. How much of an MTOW boost would it need and would the engines take that much?

Has anyone been tracking the production rate for the -1000? Where does Airbus stand right now?

Has anyone been tracking the production rate for the -1000? Where does Airbus stand right now? There is not a separate production rate for the -1000 as it has very high commonality with the -900 and shares all the same production facilities. I use this source, which is excellent ; www.a350-production.com/production-listSo far 5 -1000s have been delivered, in this the first year of deliveries. CX has 3 and QR has 2. Looking at the frames in production the total deliveries in 2018 should be 10-15. Up to eight for each of QR and CX. VS is the next scheduled operator in 2019, they have a frame just entering assembly and are taking one of the test frames which is being modified for them. French Bee are also taking a refurbished test frame. Guessing I would say 10-15 per year might be typical going forward. Geoff

Looking at the current backlog of ~160 frames, that is 10-15 years of production at that rate. I remember reading a few years ago that Airbus was planning to do around 3 per month for the 1000. But you are right about the high degree of commonality and shared production facilities with the 900. This would allow Airbus to sustain even low production rates of the type profitably and at lower costs compared to something like the 777X that uses a dedicated line for itself.

Yes it does seem low but a quick check shows 19 -1000s in the MSN range 275-374 and 4 of those are for EY and so must be doubtful. Perhaps 15-20 would have been a better guess ! Airbus has the flexibility to alter the proportion between -900 and -1000 as customers demand. Geoff

You are asking the right questions ! To morph into a ULH monster, the A35K would need very deep changes indeed ! Additional tanks might be part of the answer, but you cannot fill them up if you are MTOW limited ... I am still not fully convinced that QF can make its dream come true, at least in the next few years.

Has anyone been tracking the production rate for the -1000? Where does Airbus stand right now? If I remember correctly, Airbus expected that one out of seven A350s would be an A35K (= 14%), which is consistent with other posts upthread. That was probably hardly more than a forecast, though since the product mix depends on customer choices.

Has Airbus started putting the new winglets on A35Ks? ... They now seem to be production standard on -900s but not on 350Ks. Are they just not worth it given that the twist is already in 350K wings or is Airbus holding off and developing something more optimal as part of the 'ULR' offering for Quantas?

No plans to use the new winglets on the -1000 at the moment, but I will agree that we might see something come of it when Airbus announces a ULR launch. Or maybe they are working on an even better winglet for that, who knows...
