Today, the world lost a great scientist, one of the greatest physicists of my time. Stephen Hawking: Visionary physicist dies aged 76Despite being given just 2 years to live after his diagnosis, his physical limitations were of no barrier to his will to contribute to humanity's knowledge and understanding of the universe. I can't think of any other physicists in the last century who became such a household name other than the great Albert Einstein whose birthday is, coincidentally, today, which is also 'Pi day'. RIP Stephen Hawking.

Five petabytes ... How many gigas is that ? I wonder whether at some point there will exist computers able to handle so many data on their own ?

I wonder whether at some point there will exist computers able to handle so many data on their own ? It will take a few years but yes, that will happen. In the early 80's I sold Seagate Harddisks with a capacity of 20 or 30 Megabytes. That was not even enough to store a single picture from the Canon camera I have now. Western Digital a that time offered one with a whopping 80 Mb. Today Seagate offers a 14 Terrabyte HD . . .

Existing computers can handle that amount of data, it's about how long it would take one computer to process it ! Splitting the data up and letting multiple computers process it first, speeds up the end to end time.
