Way too soon for them to be talking about widebody development. They can't even get so much as a regional jet into service even after a 10 year delay. And that too is a 80% recycled MD-80 design. Bombardier and Embraer, who have much much more technical expertise and market experience, have so far kept away from such a project. Home market and financial support can only help so much if schedule disruptions and reliability problems end up punishing the operators' bottom lines...

They will need some truly good engine first. I mean a western engine, A350- or 777X-class. Otherwise it will be just another Il-86 or -96. At some point they just have to start developing their own big aircraft, even with a first generation of something never being competitive with the best in class aircraft. But for the big stuff it is too early I'd say. If they have the money let them do it. In Russia one can see how difficult it is even for experienced and capable military builders to come up with competitive commercial products, marketing and services. They certainly earn money with their Mi-8-helicopters, missiles and Su-Fighters but not with their commercial aircraft.

I have no doubt they will use an engine from one (at least) of the three leading manufacturers, most probably GE and/or P&W.

If I'd be China I maybe picked a thousand bright young engineers and let them develop some plastic blended wing body from scratch now. And another thousand to develop my own custom sized "propfan" engines for it. That (go hightech) or build some "flying jeep", cheap, rugged and simple aircraft for all the undeveloped parts of the world where western aircraft are not able to operate.
