Apparently, the tail section has been located, raising the hopes to quickly find the FDR and voice recorder as well: Update: Black box pinger signals have been detected. www.reuters.com/article/2015/01/09/us-indonesia-airplane-idUSKBN0KG09L20150109Hoping they are in good condition. Edit: Bloomberg also reports that the pings were detected some 300m from the tail and that divers are being deployed to check it out. Not sure if they meant that the black boxes were that distance away from the tail or if the signals were detected from there. Also, the fuselage has been found apparently.

WSJ has some news about the progress on autopsies: - Autopsies carried out on several victims from AirAsia Flight 8501 have revealed impact injuries such as broken legs, but no burns, early clues that may help investigators figure out what happened in the crash. - Lung samples from the first few autopsies have been sent to an Indonesian laboratory for signs of seawater and plankton following a request from pathologists...“If there’s sea water or plankton in their lungs, then we can say that they were still alive when the plane crashed into the sea,” - They are focusing on trying to conduct post mortems on foreigners who don’t have the same cultural sensitivities to the procedures as many Indonesians, Mr. Budiyono said. Indonesian authorities have decided to conduct autopsies on all foreigners recovered from the crash, unless families expressly reject the procedures. And, article also says two passengers were pulled from the tail section still strapped in their seats.

The FDR has been retrieved which was interestingly found under the wing of the aircraft. Seems to suggest that there was a lot of movement of the debris in the water. A little question: do investigators really try and bring up every piece of the aircraft or only the critical parts necessary for investigations? I recall for AF447 they brought up some bits, but believe that because of the extreme depth and difficulty of the salvage op, only what was absolutely necessary was brought up.

I think it is normally only the critical parts due to the cost involved. CVR has now been found, 20m from where the FDR was however it has yet to be retrieved. www.smh.com.au/world/airasia-flight--qz8501-blackbox-from-plane-retrieved-20150112-12mdpo.html

The Reuters article says that FDR was brought to the surface indeed, but it is the CVR that is under the wing and that is the reason why they couldn't take it out of the water yet....
It also says that most of the bodies not found yet most likely would be in the fuselage, I'm now wondering, have they been able to inspect the part of the fuselage that had been detected?....
Also I'm surprised about the FDR, they seem to leave it/transport it in a box full of sea-water, what could be a reason for that?......
