Is Tim Clark backpedaling to re_order A350s, or is he just trying to pressure Boeing/GE into increasing 787-10 power requirements ? Somehow, this reminds me of the recent 777X negociation. As regards flight cost concerns, I think Airbus can pit an interesting mix of regular A359s (for longer or freight-heavy routes) and regional (derated) A359s (for other regional routes) versus Boeing's 787-10.

They can do that very easily - just remove some tanks..... I think it's even simpler : download a different software reducing maximum engine thrust and MTOW. This allows a lower purchase price, lower airport taxes, lower engine maintenance costs and a slightly reduced fuel consumption. It works if you don't need the full range or full payload. If conditions change and you need more payload at range, ask Airbus to change that software, pay a fee, and you have a regular A359.
