I posted about the following issue first in the '787 general discussion' thread since it is 787-specific, not QR-specific. According to Leeham's Bjorn Fehrm, the fact that many QR 787 passengers (I think about one third of economy passengers in a nine-abreast configuration) have to be bothered by an IFE box at foot level draws very bad passenger reviews, especially when comparing QR's 787s and A350s. Somehow, though QR's IFE provider (THALES) is the same on 787s and A350s, the A350 layout did not work in the 787. leehamnews.com/2015/07/03/bjorns-corner-bandit-mask-explained-and-nonexistent-ife-boxes/

Does anyone know when QR will receive their first 787-9?

As I earlier thought 30 787-8 Qatar Airways will be replaced by 30 787-9 The gist of the story seems to be that QR is dumping excess capacity onto Air Italy, as its existing aircraft plus incoming orders exceed its own needs. - Five A332 transferred immediately 'on a temporary basis' (to be replaced later by 788s). - Thirty 788s (now in service in QR's fleet) transferred to Air Italy between 2019 and 2022, while QR begins to take delivery of 789s. - Twenty 737 MAX recently ordered by QR, to be delivered to Air Italy from April 2018. The transfers are made under the guise of a lease at market conditions from QR's leasing arm. I doubt however that Air Italy can grow fast enough to use such a large capacity profitably, if at all. In short, QR over-ordered and invested abroad to dump excess capacity, hoping to mitigate its growing problems. Maybe that plan can be successful in the long term, but I see huge roadblocks in the short term.
