The French BEA held a press conference this afternoon, just after a joint press event by Hollande - Merkel - Rajoy.
The BEA confirmed already known information about the flight profile and lack of communication with ATC after the aircraft began to descend.
In my opinion the new facts are : - the BEA managed to extract a workable audio file from the CVR ; they refused to provide any information on its content at this stage ; - the BEA "could not confirm" Hollande's assertion (a few minutes earlier) that the "shell" of the FDR had been found without the FDR itself, and claimed that finding the FDR is first priority.

The most intriguing point in this crash seems to be : why did'nt they change direction while reducing altitude ? When you have to go down and you are above a mountain chain, you hurry to some place giving you at least a fighting chance to land safely ! Is this a case of depressurisation with incapacited pilots ? That could certainly be a plausible cause. However, NY times is reporting that one of the pilots was locked out of the cockpit. www.nytimes.com/2015/03/26/world/europe/germanwings-airbus-crash.html?smid=tw-bna&_r=0

The NYT also reports that the CVR provides evidence of the second pilot knocking in vain at the closed cockpit door. If all this is true - and the NYT is at the top of its profession - then everything points to pilot suicide ... Why some pilots decide to take so many people with them when they want to die is beyond me.

I'm not going to speculate further on this particular accident. But going on a tangent, I have to say, I'm increasingly getting nervous about the cockpit security these days. There have been one too many close calls even in recent memory where mentally unstable pilots were at the controls but thankfully were forced out of the cockpit by the other (good) pilot for security concerns. Also, the other incidents where one of the pilots became incapacitated. The reinforced doors were meant to solve a problem but has, IMO, opened up another can of worms. There needs to be a way to bypass it in emergencies.

The reinforced doors were meant to solve a problem but has, IMO, opened up another can of worms. There needs to be a way to bypass it in emergencies. We cannot have it both ways : either the cockpit is subject to intrusion from the cabin (--> terrorist/hijacking risk), or it is immune (--> rogue pilot risk). Which is the higher risk ? Many airlines mandate entry of one FA into the cockpit when one pilot gets out of it. I doubt this is enough, unless the FA is a young man and, even then ...
