I can probably help here with that question.
I often fly the TPE-BKK-AMS flight which is a torture on the A340. Was much nicer when it was the 747.
Bascially from TPE-BKK and back its all Thai and Taiwanese with a very low number of Europeans and etc. Of course from BKK-AMS and vis versa its nearly opposite with 80 percent of the plane filled with Europeans.
Why they dont fly direct? Because there are still restrictions. Flying from Taiwan to another country straight over the PRC is not currently allowed. However they can fly to Mainland China where they have the convoluted solution to sort of see it as a domestic flight unofficially.
So if you watch flights TPE-FRA and when they were flying directly to London (was scrapped 2-3 years ago) They actually flight north east at first and usually go around the top end of China (sometimes cutting across the north-east tip of China). And then they swing around to the west and fly over Russia. It makes for a very long flight and so for a long flight they need higher yields.
AMS even direct from TPE is lower yield than FRA hence they go to BKK which could use the extra capacity and they can pick up low yielding passengers to AMS. The route I doubt makes much money if any because they sell economy pretty cheap (I tend not to go that cheap so I can earn my miles) and Business class sells really cheap I talked often to people saying they got 1200 pound return trip on the flight on and off.
Anyway because its cheap all round the flight is almost always full but yeah low yield. The lady at the airline says there is plenty of competition.

Thanks tris06! Just a question, why is it a torture to fly on an A340?............. Yes tris06 why a torture on an A340 ? Well i still get a thrill flying on a 4 engine plane as i know for CAL atleast that will be the end of it in 3-4 years time.B747 is also expected to go before the end of the decade. However in economy its pretty tight 3.5hr TPE-BKK. And BKK-AMS is like a 12-13hr depending on head winds. The only nice thing is in TPE/BKK and AMS I can use the (first/business)lounges. What i prefer about the A330 TPE-BNE over the A340 is that there is no bulkhead for the first row so I can stretch out. Also the cabins on the A340's are the same since they were built in 2000-2002.So they are tired cabins. Also when i am not in the front row (rarely) the guy next to me in the window seat is complaining about the old big entertainment box under the seat in front of him. No doubt i am trying to enjoy the last few flights on the A340 but still glad when i get on a 747(upper deck usually)or an A330. I am saving my mileage (160,000 currently) up for the a350 for sure. If I can I will get the first flight in business class to AMS.

We are just reserving our business class upgrades to aviod expiring mileage. TPE-AMS latest date of travel the 30th of September 2016. Really hoping that the A350 will be on this route by then. One would assume atleast 2 frames need to be in FAL before the end of this year to have a long haul route ready by September.

And the first frame would be going into station 59 as we speak. Not sure but according to one of those lists msn 48 should just about be in station 50 by early next week. Anyway say if this frame gets started by the 15th of Dec in station 50. Thats approximately 7 months to delivery, which seems tight.

Seems on the forums there will be confusion if we dont change it.
Air China is the Beijing based airline (no idea if they ordered the A350).
China Airlines is the Taiwan based airline (4 A350's to be delivered in 2016). Supposingly they are just starting to promote their new planes coming this year.
Happy new year.
