Egyptian air traffic control lost contact with the Airbus A-321, operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia, shortly after it took off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to head to Russia, aviation sources told Reuters news agency.
The sources said the passenger plane was mainly carrying Russian tourists.
Security sources in the Sinai Peninsula confirmed reports that an aircraft was missing.

The tweet below reminds me of the JAL B747 crash in 1985. Could it have been a similar issue ? Explosive decompression related to a tail strike and its repair ?

Sad to see another accident with the loss of all onboard , RIP The tweet below reminds me of the JAL B747 crash in 1985. Could it have been a similar issue ? Explosive decompression related to a tail strike and its repair ? I'd say that would certainly be a possibility. The aircraft was still ascending when the incident happened and the tail section is separated from the rest of the wreckage (whether the separation caused the incident or was a result of the aircraft breaking up from aerodynamic forces as it came down I have no idea). What I find interesting is that I've yet to see pictures of the horizontal stabilisers so I'd be interested to see if that had anything to do with the crash.

Just seen the pictures of the wreckage on the lunchtime news. You are right, the rear fuselage / tailfin from just infront of the rear door is away from the main wreckage. The horizontal stabilisers don't seem to be there. Could an explosive decompression have blown them off ? That might explain the FR24 traces showing steep climbs followed by steep descents in the last few seconds of the data ? The JAL B747 decompression in 1985 blew the vertical tail fin off.
