This seems to put to rest the a.net speculation that Airbus would cancel the A319neo.

I believe Airbus really needed the A319neo for customers with exceptional performance requirements (high altitude etc.) and those ACJ customers who needed range.

There might be more reasons for the 319neo.....
We know AA has a lot of 320neo on order and they might be 319 + 321 s as was in the past. We have seen many 320 - 319 changes in the past. There is a lot of thin routes operated by 319/737-700 now too big for 100 seater too thin for 320-321. Do we believe EasyJet is ready to completely switch to 320 ? There is a lot of routes filling just barely the 319, why would there be suddenly an 30+ people increase ? There are Gemanwings with mostly 319 fleet and more. We see there few orders but there might be in the reality considerably more.
To operate 319 is and will be cheaper than 320.
318/737-600 was too small - too short body in the cca 100 people segment and could not compete with narrower more optimal for the size Exx + CRJs + SJ

I agree with s543, and wish to add a few other factors backing the A319neo.
- Its runway performance will be useful to airlines serving hot-and-high airports. - It will allow Airbus to offer an excellent corporate jet. - It may deter some customers from ordering the CSeries family.
