But this isn't really a new order for Airbus if Iran Air just are buying "used" aircraft from Synergy/Avianca? And there is more than 10 parked ones A332 TK has in AYT !

The Avianca planes have been delivered to a lessor in 2014 and 2015, hence it won't be recorded as a new order in the Airbus books. When Iran Air announced the order, it was supposed to order them all from Airbus.

That's because IranAir is in desperate need for new planes immediately and it couldn't wait for the frame to pass all the assembly and flight line's levels. Thease aircrafts were the best quick solution for IranAir and are expected to land in Tehran in next week. Also IranAir will take delivery of its first A350-900 in few days from now.that A359 is being prepared for delivery in TLS. IranAir plans to order 16A35Ks and will lease the ntu Sri Lanka's until it's own orders be ready.

When Iran Air announced the order, it was supposed to order them all from Airbus. Leasing a not taken up plane from a lessor instead of ordering a new one is the kind of change that may occur between a MoU and a firm contract. To Airbus, the difference is small since NTU aircraft compete with new ones anyhow, and tend to be cheap.

But this isn't really a new order for Airbus if Iran Air just are buying "used" aircraft from Synergy/Avianca? As far as I know, these A330s haven’t made any commercial flights. On the other hand, Iran-Air is desperate to have some deliveries as soon as possible. This is mainly because US sanctions has made its fleet small and aging. Now, as a part of nuclear deal between Iran and some western countries (JCPOA), the sanctions are being removed and Iran-Air can renew its fleet. From Wikipedia: “By the late 1970s, Iran Air was the fastest growing airline in the world and one of the most profitable. By 1976, Iran Air was ranked second only to Qantas, as the world’s safest airline, having been accident free for at least ten consecutive years. Although both airlines were accident free, Iran Air came second only because of fewer operational hours flown compared to Qantas.”

Here is a picture of their fleet list from JP Airlines 1978 book. Not a big airline and not really expanding much ! PS the tsar of Iran was then overthrown in 1979 and things went down hill from there, sanctions etc ....

Leasing a not taken up plane from a lessor instead of ordering a new one is the kind of change that may occur between a MoU and a firm contract. I understand, it just means Airbus will have less firm orders to book. Or are these leases just temporary and will they firm up all orders? I'm also surprised Iran Air is taking aircraft with different cabins. Those A330s have an Avianca configured cabin. With 250+ Airbus/Boeing/ATR aircraft to order, one would think they design their own cabins.
