This is actually quite interesting topic. Look here: www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/air-transport/2018-04-03/indian-government-looks-divest-air-indiaWhile just skimming through the article one number caught me: 38000 employees ! Looking at their fleet - 124 planes out of it 49 WB I just thought how much people is in other Indian Airlines and voila: JetAirways - looking here www.jetairways.com/EN/IN/InvestorInformation/financials.aspxHas about 16000 employees - and 111 planes - out of it 22WB Both have about 13% of the Indian domestic market. And finally IndiGo looking here: www.goindigo.in/information/investor-relations.html?linkNav=investor-relations_footerHas about 14500 people and 40% domestic market (! ) - Their fleet is only NB - 159 planes. i.e. The STATE is VERY VERY poor owner. Similar to the situation with Alitalia. I doubt very much that there is some "reasonable" and or "sensible" investor ready to take all those people with very STRONG unions in both cases. The common sense says that either the UNIONs MUST be dismantled and than investor might appear - or the whole thing should have been "under" looooooooong time ago. Here we have a very clear and decisive showcase on the detrimental influence of UNIONs onto the airline industry as a whole, specifically if the state is the "manager". We might find of course more similar cases around the world. For comparison I looked at UNITED (I could find the numbers easily) and they have 1256 planes and about 90 000 people - i.e. if Air India would have 1256 planes they would need about 385 000 people !!!!!!!!

I think IndiGo hasn't any more interest in acquiring Air India any longer.

If the Indian government is serious about privatising Air India (is it ?), then it must recapitalise it first, so that the airline has positive value for investors. In present conditions, it may be no more than a financial burden, so why take it ?
