In flight shut down? Would be the first known case if true. I am afraid it may be the second case, though I don't remember the details about the first one. Well the aviation week article linked above does state it is the first case of an IFSD for a Trent XWB in service.

Can anyone educate me how etops works in such a situation? To use an american NFL quote, i am "monday morning Quarterbacking", but if i understand etops, could not they continue to JFK on 1 Engine?

Really interesting video, thanks. I like the cockpit culture that everyone crosschecks and challenges and accepts mistakes. It takes me back by contrast to the amazing crew performance after the Singapore A380 engine out.

The rule is that they must immediately divert to the nearest suitable airport, which provides a degree of flexibility. The captain decides which airport can be considered as 'suitable', but he may have to provide explanations after arrival. In some cases, an airport may be deemed too close since it takes time to lose altitude. In the Iberia case, I don't know whether Boston was nearer than NY.

The flighttrack is just one side back😉 Boston was nearer.
