I created a new thread, alternatively we can discuss about this in the 'Airbus developments' thread or the A321LR?..... Thank you, Fabien. Though not officially a project, this is more than a rumour, since it was called a 'study' by an Airbus representative. The -XLR seems to have little in common with the A321 LR, which is a flexible A321neo variant. (I duplicate here my latest post in the 'Airbus product development' thread). Still no clue about the tanks ... Are we talking about a wingbox tank, or is Airbus designing a built-in fuselage tank to replace the ACTs and increase their capacity ?

They can put on new wings on the A321 and size it to counter any upcoming Boeing competitor. Boeing is likely going to be bigger and all new but Airbus can be faster and cheaper and more common to big A320 fleets. Looks like some interesting fight is coming up in 2019.

I assume that this time it will only be finding space for fuel and increase the MTOW again. There seem to be some space around the center tank, wing box, and fixed tanks take less space than ATCs. Perhaps a tank in the Elevator/horizontal tail plane? Trying for a low expense change.
And bingo, you have the 321XLR, more fuel and still place for luggage or freight.

I think we see very Boeing friendly reporting. The A321XLR seems to be a sure thing to me and where comes the pax limit from? The plus and plus plus are shelved, but I am sure are revisited, in the case that the 797 will be launched. In regards to engine power, I thought the standard P&W offering on the A321neo is 33 klb and a 35 klb is on offer or at least designed. leehamnews.com/2014/05/20/pw-media-day-2-gtf-gets-35000-lb-thrust-rating/
