I don't hope for it, but the FAA is playing with fire here betting against the possibility of a US MAX crash where others have grounded them for precautionary measures. It would open up a whole set of problems and questions about the FAA's role should that ever happen.
And if it turns out that the ET cause does warrant a grounding in the end, it'd be a major embarrassment for the FAA and erode public confidence in the them for allowing non-airworthy aircraft to keep flying.

I think the decision is driven purely politically and the fact that WN is in really F.....U... state now. Once the grounding order is out, WN need to start cancelling flights. Also, Boeing will make history that 2 consecutive new planes are being grounded by FAA only 6 years apart. While the grounding before 787 is 1979 which is 34 years before 2013.

I can't tell if Jet Airways misses payment or they actually ground the planes for safety .... My understanding is Jet currently grounding mixed types of aircraft, not limiting to 737-8.

The UK CAA have just banned the MAX from U.K. airspace, including overflights !
