I don't think so. The variant has not been launched yet, and therefore cannot be ordered. I suppose that Airbus had a two-step approach, first collecting LoIs based on still moving specs, then providing more information and asking customers to reconfirm their interest. How "firm" are such "commitments" was my question. I do not think there is any truly firm commitment yet from either side. EDIT : I realise that customers already having firm A350-900 orders might show interest in taking a few aircraft with different specs. In that case, the orders would be firm, but there would be not increase Airbus' orderbook, and the specs could still be changed by the customer ...

From the AW quoted by jkkw : "Although Airbus has been talking with individual airlines about what it is calling the A350-900 regional, and it says some have firmed up commitments already, it plans to formally offer the aircraft toward the end of this year"

My mistake, we're talking about formally launching the lower MTOW version now.

I think, what this all says is that Airbus is primarily aiming this derated version at LH against the 787-10. They're supposed to decide between the two later this year too.
