Actually I still don't get it why they are dropping them so fast? There must be hub routes where LH can fill them given that it is a hub airline and not point to point? Isn't it cheaper to let one A380 fly instead of two -say- A340-300s? Is demand so asymmetric that big planes don't make sense?
Even with some assumed seatcost disadvantage versus -say- some brand new A350 shouldn't an older and almost "paid for" A380 work economically especially with today's cheap oil?
Can airlines today walk away from leases easier than before? Many seem to just cancel long term leases without too much pain?

During the HY1-results presentation, Carsten Spohr said Lufthansa will decide later in Q3 on what to do with the A380-fleet. The situation of the eight remaining aircraft hasn't been decided. Form this you can conclude that if long-haul remains weak it can't be ruled out that they will be either permanently retired or placed in deep storage. The 6 that have been retired will be returned to Airbus, as reported before.

Lufthansa repeated in its phase 2 restructuring update and again in an email to me that 6 have been permanently phased out, so the fate of the 7th in Teruel might not necessarily be the same.

Permanent or temporarily makes a big difference. The Aerotime headline and text seem to contradict itself concerning the fate of those A380s.

They can be called back if the market should recover surprisingly strong (like after some vaccination) but otherwise they will leave the active fleet.
Could this be more of balance sheet motivated? Instead of now depreciating those expensive assets early they can consider them "reserve" and of higher book value for some time to come?
