Emirates, Lufthansa, Thai - all with First on upper deck. For me, it'll be quite strange, for various reasons, if any of the above operators pick up the leases. Another possibility I'm thinking of is that they will go to multiple new operators who do not need large numbers of A380s.

Today's announcement raises loads of questions, hope this new approach is successful but there must be doubts.
Will the MoU become a firm order ? Will the order appear in the Airbus spreadsheet ? Will building the parts for the planes start before there are customers ? Surely they won't convoy parts to TLS without having a customer !!
Lots of potential benefits for Airbus -
Hit 2013 sales target Convince reluctant 'prospects' to go with the A380 Keep production at 3/month even though there are slots free Reduce cost and time of outfitting for new customers by standardising lower deck Reduce time between order and delivery ( perhaps to less than a year )
Benefits for Doric rely on placing the planes. This suggests to me that the risks are being borne by Airbus.

I am sure that that order from Doric comes from somewhere, I am sure that Doric already knows which airline is interested in renting some A380s, I don't think they would have bought 20 A380s like that with no clue about interested renting-customers. And, I am pretty sure those customers will be airlines competing with other airlines already having A380s (just as an example, JAL and/or ANA competing with Skymark?...or airlines in Russia competing with Transaero?...). I also believe that this will have a huge snowball effect in some yet unreached markets (US!!!). And for all of that, I believe that perhaps Doric had a relatively good incentive from Airbus, to accept 20 A380s out of the blue like this... Fabien

Fabien I'd agree Fabien, Doric will definitely have strong leads for the 20 A380s & indicated that they may need more. What I like is that they will be amassing some great data on reliability & maintenance costs (as I'd imagine they get good data already from the Emirates/Singapore ones they own) which should help them: a) sell the product better (information & low capital entry for end users, be great for airlines with good operations but tight on capital...might even open up say Air India) b) negotiate good MRO deals c) probably establish/identify the most effective MRO hubs/methods d) get good deals on outfitting I think that they will be a repeat customer sooner than later!
