Too many "Maybe's" and "Probablies" in this report for me! I don't like to see targets slip etc. but surely public safety should over-rule the pride of meeting a deadline, or am I just being over cautious??

Would the waiver entail real risk ? I suppose not, but I suspect the real issue is that manufacturers should build their timetable on compliance, not on waivers ... And the FAA should not be seen again as being under Boeing influence.

I suppose that another way of looking at this is, would the FAA grant the same ruling to Airbus if they had the same situation? Fair competition etc......

Sunjet, the FAA has no jurisdiction over Airbus, it's EASA.
s543, if the FAA actually is under Boeing influence, then I think they should stand up to them from time to time, just to gain legitimacy and prevent any opinion backlash.

Oups this looks so scary to me, everyone knows that accidents are always a conjunction of 'extremely improbable' events It seems that as mentioned many times by noistar, once again economics and business tricks come over safety, I am also very surprised that the B787-8 flies since almost 3 years now and the article reveals that the GCU/RAT issue of the B787-9 also applies to the -8 series??...... Boeing asked authorities to have the certification ready for June deliveries stating for the issues to be fixed by February but what about if they aren't yet? Temporary certification would expire??...... So far I do not think I would choose a Boeing 787 for my forthcoming flight plans

Why?
Cannot both engines and APU fail for a common cause?
How is Boeing 787 designed to respond to fuel exhaustion?

In that rare case, you still have the main battery, the APU battery and the RAT (the failure of which has been described as a rare event by itself).
