What strikes me in the press release is that the financial scheme is described as a finance lease, NOT an operating lease. This is a substantial difference with previous DORIC deals, which were operating leases. The difference is that in a finance lease, in return for higher lease payments, the lessee enjoys a purchase option at an agreed (and usually very low) price, sometimes as low as 1 dollar. As a consequence, the aircraft practically belongs to the lessee (= the airline), and the resale risk stays with him, not with the lessor. Did EK choose this solution because they intend to use the aircraft longer than usual, or because they believe in the A380 second hand market, or because they just could not secure an operating lease ?
