I strongly recommend the following video, in which P&W's Bob Saia summarises the present status of the GTF, and outlines its future development.
Among a mass of information, Saia confirms that the A320 version of the engine is already performing slightly better than promised to Airbus.

Whether there may be a fallout on the A320 NEO programme is too early to say. Agree, but as first flight for the NEO isn't planned untill September, the root couse for the failure should be able to find and corractive actions taken by that time

I was just thinking of the possibility of a Gearbox failure. Could it result in the overspeed of the LPT and its disintegration producing high energy shrapnel damaging the aircraft? IIRC the HPT/LPT section is the most vulnerable part when it comes to containing an engine failure from damaging the aircraft (QF32 problem originated in the IPT section). I'm hoping it is something other than the gearbox with this incident.

Of course, John Leahy sounds confident. You would not expect otherwise, even if Airbus was deeply concerned (which is probably not the case) ...
