As they have the cockpits hatch open, maybe they only need the external power for the aircondition!

It is interesting as well that they use external power from the towing vehicle. Why would they need to power up th plane while it's towed? Are they already testing simple stuff like the speedometer for example or checking for warning messages? At KLM we use external power from the tow truck too... The aircraft is powered so we can use the "Nav/Logo and anti-collision lights, also the hydraulic system for the brakes is pressurized so we can operate the brakes in case of emergency (for some aircraft pressurization of the "Body-Gear" steering system is also necessary) If no ext. pwr. is available we start the APU to supply power... As they have the cockpits hatch open, maybe they only need the external power for the aircondition! Since air conditioning is a "bleed-air" system on the A350.... You can't use it with ext. pwr..

Thanks for your very intresting answer! Since air conditioning is a "bleed-air" system on the A350.... You can't use it with ext. pwr.. Would the APU be able to power the Air Condition on the A350? Can the 787 power the AC with external power only?

Can the 787 power the AC with external power only? If you use APU Bleed air you can use the airco... (I guess) Regarding the 787, I don't know much about that one... The whole airco system is electrical (AFAIK), so I would say it might be possible... One issue could be that the ground power is not powerful enough to operate the airco-packs. Example from KLM: We have two types of tow trucks... the GHH AM210 and AM500(XL), both have GPU's built in, but the 210 isn't powerful enough to supply a wide body (you can tow A330 and B767 with the AM210). So if we have to tow an A330 with a 210 the APU has to be started.

Yeah, I meant on a gate with enough power. With one cable you can only transfer 90kVA, the A380 and the 787 need 4 at the gates. The A380 has all the inlets in the front, the 787 has 2 in front and two behind the wing. Don't know about the A350, but compared to other aircraft this size it probably has two inlets for 180kVA combined.

I don't have time to go through it but you'll probably be able to find this information here: www.airbus.com/fileadmin/media_gallery/files/tech_data/AC/Airbus-ACA350-Jan13.pdf

Thanks, it is in chapter 5-3-0.
"Ground Power Unit (GPU): up to 2 × 90 kVA"
Both in the front as you can see in the above pictures with the tow truck and in chapter 5-4-0.

Apparently right winglet was removed due to it being "damaged in an accident".
