Those will be aircraft for airlines that don't compete on the latest and greatest IFE and business class. Used A380 will be ideal for holiday-trunk routes used by tourists and private travellers. Bangkok-Europe. Florida-Europe. Maybe even Mallorca-Manchester at times. Big airlines will want latest cabins and IFE. That pressure seems to grow all the time. A ten or twelve year old aircraft is perfectly young from a structural standpoint. A same age IFE is just yesterday's tomorrow. Bit like outdated car GPS'systems or radios. Could Virgin by any chance be interested in taking used-frames in lieu of new ones?...

That means 6 A380 less ... VS was never going to take those A380s anyway. So either Airbus swaps the order for A350s or lose it to Boeing.

At today's opening of Farnborough Airshow Virgin Atlantic ordered 8 A350-1000's, plus 4 more on lease. According to CEO Craig Kreeger said they are to replace the 747 and A340-600. Virgin keeps a purchase right for the 6 A380's ordered back in 2000, but has the right not to take them up. Sounds like an unlimited right to defer. I think the last thing Airbus wants now is to delete the 6 from the orderbook.
Note: I am at FIA16 and are invited by Airbus on Thursday. I have some questions, but let me know if you have urgent ones.

Based on Airbus February O&D release, it seems like the order for 6 A380s from Virgin now are confirmed cancelled
The question remains then whether the deposits was lost or credited towards other orders?
