Further quotes from the Bloomberg link provided by someone.
"While Qatar Air remains interested in a re-engined Neo version of the doubledecker, Al Baker said he’s also keen on retrofitting existing planes should Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc (RR/) or the General Electric co.-Pratt & Whitney Engine Alliance offer an upgrade that can fit on the same pylons. It’s also possible that Qatar might consider buying more A380s depending on efficiency gains, the CEO said in an interview.
Al Maha Airways, through which Qatar Air plans to add domestic operations in Saudi Arabia, is a candidate for flights with A350s and A380s tapping the Muslim pilgrimmage market, though no license has yet been obtained for the unit, he said."
Apart from the likely exercise of three options which someone already pointed out to, these quotes contain 3 other interesting statements : - QR is interested in a possible A380neo ; - AAB suggests the new engines should also be offered to retrofit the current A380 version ; I doubt however Airbus would show much interest ... - QR might need need more A380s both for its existing mainline operation (depending on actual efficiency gains) and for its Al Maha subsidiary to address the Muslim pilgrimmage market ; whether these would be the current or the future version is unclear (the current version seems adequate in my opinion).

The -one day- worn out early EK A380 frames would be perfect as 2nd hand aircraft for the pilgrim travel market. No need to buy the latest and greatest for those mainly midrange routes.
Airframe and engine together are certified. So a "little reengine" of older A380ceoneo parallel to some likely stretched A380neo is not that easy to do and it is costly for not the full performance gain.

I suppose it sounds good in QR to hear the flag-carrying airline talk about helping pilgrammage. What you don't want to say is that pilgrims pay low fares and don't warrant new aircraft.

Which is in most cases "gona" happen Up to that modify the first and buss to all economy for 800+ people to be used for few weeks a year -- not so easy

I'm wondering if the next 2 (MSN193,MSN197) have not been deferred a little,
French wikipedia Production List says MSN193-delivery in 2016-06 and MSN197-delivery in 2016-07.....
This could maybe explain why MSN193 was not rolled out from FAL yet and was overtaken by the next frame in line (MSN204EK......), and would explain why MSN198EY was convoyed before MSN197...... //if true MSN197 might not be convoyed before Aug or Sep?......

Maybe, though it makes little sense to delay an airframe in final assembly as it would cause a bottleneck. You would want to finish assembly and store the airframe inside another hangar, or on the flight line. I think something else is going on.

Indeed, to me MSN193 is finished (with or without engines?) and stored either in 31C either in a FL hangar..... until roll out...
