French Air Force has gotten a pretty new A330-200, ex-Avianca. Must be a good deal during this time. Should be MSN 1608*** Air test today: Airbus A330 -243 1608 F-UJCS Armée de l´Air et de l´Espace air-test at LDE 29oct20, N-reg prior delivery ex N203SA www.skyliner-aviation.de/regdb.main?LC=nav4&page=2

This is certainly a very good thing, with Cathay's ancient fleet. Cathay really need a long-delayed fleet update, especially with Cathay Dragon using so many 25 years+ A330s. They are certainly not in the best status.

They are certainly not in the best status. I would rather categorize this as getting rid of depreciated assets like what Delta does with MDs and 717s rather than a "fleet update". Cathay won't need that many regionalized flying in the foreseeable future anyways.

Before the pandemic, Cathay was really lag behind SQ already. The main routes like LHR-HKG are fine, but from HKG onwards especially with Cathay Dragon involved for South East Asia or Mainland China transit, the equipment was ancient and really need some fleet updating (and the service was poor).
I fly these routes regularly, and I choose SQ over CX every single time even it means I have a longer route.
I agree, this is a good opportunity for CX to rethink about fleet strategy, especially with the current political situation, CX certainly don't need that much capacity even long after the pandemic - it's no longer the hub for mainland China passengers. This is a golden opportunity to reduce the size and get ride of these old frames, those A330s are the obvious target.

As for those A330s, weren't those refurbished just a couple years ago? If the interiors were still solid I don't know if an older aircrafts will make a big difference for paying passengers cause 99% of the flying public won't be able to tell the aircraft age from the interior. But yeah, I agree with your statements that 20 years+ A330s should be the easy target of fleet reductions.

Looks like ex-Airbus test frame, MSN 871, F-WWCB has been bought/leased by AELF (Aircraft Engine Lease Finance) and is currently undergoing a heavy maintenance check at TLV. It will be used to operate cargo flights for AELF. (it does not have seats installed anyways being a test frame)
