I rather prefer using flying hours instead of air distance. A shorter route can take longer due to stronger headwind, for example.

I rather prefer using flying hours instead of air distance. A shorter route can take longer due to stronger headwind, for example. I only use the distance as a reference. I've been on an almost nine-hour flight AMS-JFK and a slightly over six hour flight JFK-AMS. And it's 3638 miles / 5854 km as the crow flies, both ways.

They your were lucky. Sometimes the jet can travel up to one hour faster due to the jetstream, or slower to due heavy head winds.

It is interesting - it is the first 300ER to leave the fleet after 10 years only - while there is still a bunch of non ER older frames

The lonely 777-200ER is still in use because restrictions on one airport in Pakistan. In 2018 there are only 777-300ER left to be retired, AFAIK 13 are planed to go. In 2020 we can see the first A380 retirement, if leases are not extended.
