It is odd indeed. The A350 was something he called as being "too small" but now we see him expressing interest in the even smaller 787-9. And how economical will it be to fly the 777-8X into 2nd/3rd tier cities? Will there be that much cargo going into those places?
It almost feels like he regrets the lack of capability of the 787-10, when the A350 would have worked perfectly for these missions.

He actually has time to change his mind for those 787 orders ....

Two more 777-300ER has left the fleet and been returned på lessor, AerCap for both of them. Also these have found a new operator in Russia

Wow, didn't realize it's already Ek's last 77W. This means next Boeing delivery to EK will be 777X.
